Experiencing hiccups?

Well, someone is probably missing you:p

That is what most of us have heard from our folks. But guess what, there’s more to it – the actual science behind it!

Hiccups are actually burst of increase inspiratory(inhaling) activity of muscles involved in inhalation. It is due to irritation of nerve pathway from brain to these muscles. It is usually of short-lived but maybe of significant importance if it persists too long.

CAUSES: Eating too much or too quickly, irritation in stomach or throat, or feeling nervous or excited.

REMEDIES: You have probably heard and tried many methods to get rid of hiccups – holding breath and counting till 10 is the best method. Putting sugar under your tongue might work too. And maybe the most famous remedy – having someone jump and scaring the shit out of you helps some people to goodbye their hiccups too!

Soooo “HIC”.. Oops!

Thank you.

Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day

Hey..So here’s a post to all the wonderful and amazing MOMS in the world..

Just a question.

  • Why is mother’s milk so important to baby?

Mother’s milk not only contains nutrients which are required for the normal development of baby but it also contains antibodies(umm..lets say they are body’s shield to all the infection entering the body) which protects the baby’s immunity.

Immunity is the ability of the body to defense itself from invading microbes (basically a defense system)

Mother’s first milk which is called colostrum is very rich in antibodies especially IgA and IgG (these are types of antibodies).

Antibodies from mother’s milk interact with the immune system of the newborn to help shape lifelong immune responses of the baby.

  • How long should a mother breastfeed?

Ideally, a mother should only breastfeed for 6 months after which she can breastfeed with some liquid diets as after 6 months, breastfeeding alone doesn’t provide the necessary nutrients to the baby. Practically, a mother can continue breastfeeding for as long as she wants to. It is very good for the I.Q of the baby as it increases it by an average of 7 points. So, it is very beneficial for the baby in every way.

Lastly, all the Kids-Be Thankful To Your Moms.

P.S: MUMMA, Thank you for all the pains that you experienced because of me , for all the nurturing that helped me into who i am, for all the scoldings that i deserved, for all the guidance that you gave, for all the unconditional love that you offered. LOVE YOU TILL ETERNITY.

Banana Myth

Banana Myth

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when someone says ‘banana’ ?

A fully fledge breakfast .

A nutritious fruit that is prepackaged so if you’re busy or didn’t have breakfast in the morning, grab a banana, peel it, eat and toss the peel!

But it is an old wives’ tale that eating banana at night causes cold.

Well, only if banana has some superpower to produce virus in itself then it’s possible.

Common cold is a contagious viral infection and bananas have nothing to do with it.

But YES! It does increases the risk of getting common cold. The question is “HOW?”

Banana increases mucus and phlegm production so it increases fluid buildup which may cause an additional problem in respiratory stress. So it is best if you avoid bananas till the symptoms have subsided.

Bananas are rich in potassium, fibres and other minerals so it is healthy in every way!

In asthmatic patients, the airway of lungs are swollen, narrow and filled with mucus. Certain kind of food and environmental bacteria can irritate the sensitive airways and trigger an asthmatic attack. However, you can eat banana safely as it contains Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) which relaxes bronchial smooth muscles present in lungs allowing more air to pass through.

However, there are various sources that suggest that bananas creates mucus production which may also worsen the condition so it is advisable to consult a doctor for banana consumption.

All in all.. the myth or half-truth about banana is just deteriorating banana’s worth in our lives so better not believe it and start having tasty Bananas!

Medico on it’s way

Medico on it’s way

Hello Everyone

So I was just watching my lecture as usual with 1.4x speed fast forwarded as he speaks slow:p

Then as usual I got bored and started wandering through my newly gifted laptop.. all its new features.. YouTube search.. etc Then it struck me.. why not start a blog!

Like I have always wanted to..

But major question that stopped me was “WHAT WILL BE THE BLOG ABOUT?”

Not like I wanted it to be the best blog or something but I really want this to be beneficial to people who read it.

My sister laughed at the whole idea of me starting with a blog yet eventually helped me with the idea of what to write and also with the domain(yeah she is pretty helpful at times:p)

So here it is..

Since I am a Medico.. Why not write something related to body or drugs that will surely help you in day-to-day life. For example why are some drugs recommended to take early in the morning without having food while some after a meal? Why dietitians recommend some fruits instead of a meal? Why drinking just two cups of water before all your three meals is helpful in losing weight? The basic questions in our daily life with simple explanations is what I am offering here.

Lastly, I just want to say..

When people start liking what you write, you eventually start writing what people like!

Thank you.
